What is an Administrator in Probate?
An administrator is the person appointed to manage the estate of someone who died without a valid Will. The role is essentially the same as an executor’s, but the authority to act comes from a Grant of Letters of Administration rather than from a Will.
Administrator vs executor
An executor is named in a Will. An administrator is appointed by the Probate Registry when there is no valid Will. Once the respective grant is issued, both have the same legal authority over the estate.
Who can be an administrator?
The right to apply follows the Rules of Intestacy: a surviving spouse or civil partner has priority, followed by adult children, then other relatives. An unmarried partner does not automatically have the right to act.
What does an administrator do?
- Value the estate fully as at the date of death
- Complete and submit the IHT400 to HMRC
- Apply for Letters of Administration using form PA1A
- Collect in assets, pay debts and taxes, distribute the estate in accordance with the Rules of Intestacy
- Draw up estate accounts

This service isn’t easy but it is brilliant! From our previous experience of using a solicitor for probate, who asked us to do 80% of the work, searching for bank records, certificates etc. etc. this service was difficult, not easy, but well worth it! The support team are excellent and help with those questions you can’t easily answer. Google helps immensely also. But the real benefit is saving at least 2% up to 5% of an inheritance. That would be most of one of my late mother-in-law’s grandkids inheritance. Bargain price makes it worth it! I am happy to strongly recommend this excellent service!

The process from start to finish was so easy and the site actually walks you through everything you need to do, it only brings up the forms that are relevant to your probate claim and even self populates them for you, all this and at a fraction of the cost of employing the services of a solicitor. I would not hesitate in recommending them to anyone.
